What does a universal-design entryway retrofit include?
A full retrofit package usually combines three elements:
- A zero-step or near-zero-step entry from the driveway or walkway to the front door.
- A covered landing outside the door — a roof extension deep enough to shelter someone in a wheelchair or with a walker from Pinellas rain.
- A wider door — typically upgrading a 30 or 32-inch original door to a 36 or 42-inch swing door, with lever hardware and an ADA-style threshold.
The three are usually done together because doing them piecemeal creates rework. Regrading for a zero-step approach can affect roof-drainage tie-ins for a covered landing. Widening a door often means reframing the header, which is easier while the porch or entry framing is already open.

Threshold removal and step removal are the highest-ROI moves. The entryway is usually where you get the biggest safety return per dollar spent, because it is the transition point that everyone entering or leaving the home crosses multiple times per day.
How does a zero-step entry work on a St. Petersburg home?
Most St. Petersburg homes sit at least a few inches above grade — often more if the home has been elevated for flood-zone compliance. Getting from the walkway or driveway to the door without steps requires either regrading the approach, extending a landing, or building a low-slope ramp that reads as sidewalk rather than as a ramp.
Three physical requirements drive the scope:
- Grade slope. The approach cannot exceed the slope allowed by the Florida Accessibility Code for an accessible route. Steeper than that and the walkway starts to function as a ramp, which brings handrail requirements.
- Concrete flow to drain. The finished slab has to slope away from the house so rainwater does not pond at the threshold. In our climate, a flat landing is a rot problem.
- Threshold height. The door threshold itself needs to be low enough to roll over. A standard 5/8-inch threshold is manageable for many users but not all — this is where the OT specification matters.
If the existing walkway is too short for a compliant slope, we sometimes extend the landing further out and pick up the approach from a longer run. In tight lots, we may need to bring the driveway itself up closer to door level. Every home is different.

What does a covered landing add — and why does hurricane rating matter?
A covered landing is a roof extension over the entry door, typically 4 to 8 feet deep, designed to give someone using a walker or wheelchair enough shelter to open the door and cross the threshold without getting rained on. In St. Petersburg, this is not cosmetic — our afternoon storms make an uncovered landing genuinely unsafe for someone with balance limits.
Construction scope typically includes:
- Roof extension framing tying into the existing roof structure. Depending on the original roof geometry, this may be a shed extension, a gable, or a hip depending on what looks right on the house.
- Hurricane tie-in. Any new roof framing in Pinellas has to meet the wind-load requirements of the current Florida Building Code. That means proper strapping, uplift connectors, and fastener schedules that survive the Category 3 winds we plan for.

- Exterior finish. New siding, stucco patch, or trim tie-in on both sides of the reframed opening, matched to the existing home so the retrofit reads as intentional rather than as an add-on.

Do I need an occupational therapist consult before I hire a general contractor?
Yes. The OT sizes the door width, threshold height, turning radius, and approach slope to the individual user. A general contractor can build to any spec, but building to the wrong spec is expensive to redo. Start with the OT, then bring the GC in with a scope in hand.
Can a zero-step entry work in a flood zone?
Sometimes. It depends on how much freeboard the home has above base flood elevation. If the home is elevated a full story, a zero-step entry usually requires a ramp, a lift, or a redesigned side entry. This gets evaluated at design time, not at rough inspection.
How much does a full entryway retrofit cost?
