Do not use these ranges as final dimensions. This is the first question to ask on the vendor call: “What are your shaft, pit, overhead, and machine-room requirements for the unit you are recommending?”

Elevator vs stair-lift vs conventional stairs — decision math

The three options solve different problems at different price points. In rough industry-generic terms:

  • Conventional stairs. Cheapest option, no vendor coordination, no state elevator permit. Wrong answer if the patient’s mobility is already compromised or projected to be inside the design life of the addition.
  • Stair-lift. Middle price point, specialty installer (typically not a general contractor), preserves the standard staircase for other household users, and can be added after the addition is built if mobility progresses. Constrained by staircase geometry — straight runs are simpler than L-shaped or curved runs.
  • Private-residence elevator. That framing decides most of the design questions. The upstairs primary suite gets planned around the elevator’s upper landing rather than the top of the staircase. The main-floor entrance to the elevator gets planned near the primary daytime circulation path — kitchen, family room, entry — so the equipment is used naturally rather than treated as an emergency device. Storage or a hallway pocket often folds into the shaft footprint on the main floor to keep the ground plan efficient.
